Mashhad is most religious famous cities due to housing the tomb of Imam Reza, the 8th Shia Imam. This city has experienced the rise and fall of many governments during the history, such as Arabs, Turkish, and especially Mongols and Afghans whose have brought changes in the language, ethnicity and culture of the people. Mashhad was a major place along the ancient Silk Road connecting with Merv in the East and Ankara in Turkey.

Mashhad is famous also because of Tomb of Ferdowsi, the Iranian poet and writer of Shah Nameh, which book is considered as national epic of Iran.
